Tulip Festival

Every year Thanksgiving Point does the Tulip Festival. They ship tulips in from Holland and plant them all over the gardens. We're talking hundreds of thousands of tulips. I have never been because I was in school or working when my family would go. This year I happened to be on maternity leave, and they happened to extend it an extra week, so I talked to mom and Sarah and we went! It had been warm all week, so of course, it would be FREEZING cold the day we decided to go.

Despite the freezing weather, it was nice to be there, and we had fun walking all around the gardens and see all the beautiful flowers. They had some of the most amazing colors of tulips.

We managed to find the secret garden (there are signs telling you where it is, but that's okay.) and got a respite from the wind for a few minutes within the garden's four walls, which was nice. Molly loved playing the in fountain.

It was so fun to go spend time with the family with no agenda, nothing else to focus on but being together and having a good time.

Malcolm slept the whole time, which was nice cause I didn't have to worry about him getting too cold or anything.

Love those cute girls!

Our Graduate: THE DADDY!

Daddy Graduated from College! After two years and a semester he has his Applied Associates Degree from the UVU Culinary Arts Institute! He worked so hard in his program, and we are so proud of him. When I watched him walk out in the processional with his classmates my heart swelled with pride. I thought it was going to jump right out of my chest.
I know, you can't see him very well. He's right before the platform with the lei on.
The graduation wasn't as long and boring as I was expecting it to be. They split it up so only a few colleges were graduating with him, which was kind of nice. The speakers were fairly entertaining as well. All in all, it was a very nice ceremony.

After the ceremony and taking pictures (I'll get those later, I promise), we had our friends and family over for a luncheon at our house. It was so nice to see everyone and celebrate our graduate. I'm terrible at taking pictures at this sort of thing, so there aren't many I'm afraid.

We're so proud of our graduate Daddy!

This was totally candid. I love this picture!

Aunt Jen Came!

While Malcolm was still in the hospital, Jen called me one morning after I had sent her a picture of him. She asked me if she could come hold my baby on the 18th. Of course I said YES!

Unfortunately I didn't take many pictures while she was here because we were having a great time. She came and held Malcolm, we talked a lot, she got me out of the house, which was nice. We went and played at Sarah's house on Saturday just to get out of the house, which was really good for me.

On her last day in town she came over before her flight left and read some books with us.
Yes, that is Molly playing on Aunt Jen's phone while she reads a story
Molly LOVED showing off her brother to Aunt Jen, but she also loved having Aunt Jen there to play with her.

Malcolm was REALLY sad when Aunt Jen had to leave
We love when Aunt Jen comes! I was very sad when she had to leave, and wish she could have stayed longer.

Malcolm's First Days Home

Every morning while Malcolm was in the NICU I would call to see how he was doing, how he had done through the night, if they knew anything new, etc. On the morning of April 6th, I called when I woke up and they told me that the doctor had not been around to see him yet, but they were starting their rounds in just a few minutes. The nurse wasn't sure if we would be able to bring him home that day or not, and we would have to hear from the doctor once she had seen him. With a prayer in my heart, and my fingers crossed, I set out to get my family breakfast and ready to go. About 20 minutes after I had talked to the nurse, the Doctor called and said that everything looked fine, all their tests came back negative or normal, and there was no reason they could find why Malcolm had spots. She also saw no reason to keep him in the NICU, and we could bring him home as long as he passed his carseat test! There was a lot of smiles, singing, and dancing in our house after that call. As soon as breakfast was over, we dropped Molly off at Tim's house to play with Madeline, and we headed over to the hospital.

The carseat test was 90 minutes long, and all he had to do was keep his oxygen levels up the whole time. That 90 minutes seemed to last forever. We were so close to getting our little guy home with us! The doctor came and chatted with us for a few minutes, just to keep us updated on all the tests and things, and to actually meet us. Our nurse could see how anxious we were to get our boy home, so she did the whole check-out process with us while we were waiting that last unbearably long 20 minutes. We had some of the most amazing NICU nurses. They were kind and courteous, and very empathetic. We had had this nurse a few times in the 4 days we had been there. She sat with us and watched the seconds tick down for that last couple of minutes. She walked us out to our car (which I'm sure is standard procedure, but I was still glad she did). We hugged, we laughed, and she wished us good luck. Then we were on our way!

Happy to be home!

At first, Molly wasn't quite sure what to think of him. She was very gentle with him. We had worked with her on that before he got here. She liked him well enough as long as he wasn't being held or fed. If TR or I would hold him, she would start crying. The second day holding him wasn't so bad, but she didn't like me to feed him. By the third morning she was just as much in love with him as we were.

After she realized that she really did love him, we had to keep a very close eye on her to make sure she didn't love him TOO much. She is such a big helper though! She would bring me his bottle, and when he would cry she would try to put his binki in his mouth (backwards, but it was the effort that I appreciated). She even found her old binkis to show him how it was done. It wasn't uncommon to hear exclamations of "Hey Cute Boy!" around our house, even if he wasn't anywhere near her, but she could hear him.

For how new he is, he is really alert. I love those eyes.

So squishy!!

Looking back on how little Molly was. She was almost a pound and a half smaller than he was a birth, and she didn't gain any weight for her first month and a half. It's amazing to me now that she was so little. She's getting to be such a big, happy, spunky, amazing girl.

I love my kids!

Daddy's Girl

While I was in the hospital, Molly and TR got to spend a lot of time together. He was there to put her to bed at night, and he was there with her most of the day. It was nice for both of them to get to spend a little more time together.  She is such a daddy's girl.

These are two of my all time favorite pictures. You can really see how much she loves him, and he really really loves her too. I love them both so much! My family is my whole world!

While there are days that I wish that she loved me as much as she loves him (I'm sure she does, but she definitely prefers him unless it's bed time or she's hurt), I'm so glad that they already have such a strong relationship. A relationship with your Daddy is so important for little girls.

Hospital Stay

While I was in the hospital, Malcolm was in the NICU with an IV in his umbilical chord, and getting test after test performed so they could try and see what was going on with his spots.

TR stayed with Molly most of the time, since Malcolm was in the NICU and Molly needed some adjustment. She was wasn't sure what to think of me while I was in the hospital when they would come to visit. She didn't want to sit on my lap, or cuddle me, or really even talk to me.

I'm not ashamed to admit that my hospital stay was very lonely. I didn't have many visitors because the baby wasn't there. My mom came a couple of times, my in-laws came a few times, and Tim and his family came. A lot of people sent me texts throughout the day to see how our buddy was doing, to see if there were any updates, but most of my time was spent alone. I spent as much time up in the NICU as I could, and when I wasn't there I was sleeping in my room. The two days in the hospital were long, hard days, but I believe the walk to and from the NICU several times a day helped me heal as well. I felt practically back to my old self by the time I left the hospital, which was a real blessing. When Molly was born I was so sore for almost 5 weeks, and it was miserable. This time I bounced back much faster.

Since they weren't sure what exactly was wrong with Malcolm or why he had spots he was in an isolation room at the very back of the NICU. It was nice to have a room all to myself with him. I always felt strange walking through the NICU and seeing all these little tiny preemie babies and getting back to my 9 pound boy! He looked like a monster in there!

While Malcolm was in the NICU Sarah and Johnny came to visit. Sarah was on my list of people who could go see him, and Johnny came to help TR give him a blessing. The blessing was beautiful, and I knew he was going to be just fine. It was so nice to have other people there and to show him off to someone other than in pictures.

Grammy was also on the approved list to go see him in the NICU. She was there every day he was in there and got to feed him a few times. It was so comforting to know when I was home taking care of the rest of my family that someone I knew and loved was taking care of my baby.

I love newborn baby yawns!

When I got home TR made me a "Utah Valley Home Care" whiteboard like the ones they had in the hospital noting that he was the nurse and Molly was the assistant nurse. It was so nice to have such a supportive husband when I was having such a hard time with not having my whole family under the same roof. There were many times where I left him and Molly to fend for themselves for a few hours while I went to feed Malcolm. I'm also so thankful for family and friends that were so supportive and came to stay with Molly after bed time, or took her for a few hours so both TR and I could go to the hospital, or so we could take a nap.

I was home for two full days before we were able to bring Malcolm home. While it was very hard for me to leave my baby, and really what felt like a piece of my heart, at the hospital, I think it was a blessing as well. Molly was VERY clingy once I got home. She didn't want me to leave her sight, and even took naps in my bed with me the very first day. She was mostly adjusted to me being home from being gone for two days by the time we brought Malcolm home. I think that helped her adjust to him much better.

Playing with Grammy

While Mommy was in the hospital, Molly got to spend a lot of time with Daddy. I think that was really good for her. She also got to spend some time with Grandma, and Grammy so Daddy could spend some time with me and Malcolm in the hospital.

One day while she was playing with Grammy, she got to go to the park for lunch and play with the Mater car at Grammy's house.

Tired Girl

LOVE That smile!

Zoom Zoom!

I'm so grateful that we live close to family that was able to take care of my little girl while I could not. It was nice to have some time with just me and TR as well. We got to spend some time with Malcolm in the NICU, and just some time together in the hospital.

Malcolm Ernest Grimm

FB post Apr 2: Malcolm Ernest Grimm is here! He was born at 3:32pm weighing in at 9 lbs 3oz and 20" long. Mommy is doing very well. Baby gets to spend some time in the NICU due to a rash they're concerned about, but otherwise he's a healthy, chubby, cute cute boy!

This is it! The post you've all been waiting for! The Birth Story!

We had gone to the doctor on Monday morning. Dr. Grover was out of town, so we had seen Dr. Glenn. The perinatologist had said that since the baby was measuring two weeks early she hadn't wanted me to go past the 39 week mark. Dr. Glenn was surprised when I said that I had wanted to be induced while Dr. Grover was out of town. I was ready for this baby, and at 39 weeks I didn't want to wait anymore. He was skeptical, and wanted to talk to the perinatologist before agreeing to the induction, so he sent us on our way, not knowing if we would be having a baby the next day or not, telling us that they would call and let us know. We went about our day, taking naps, packing bags, getting everything ready just in case they wanted us to go in for the induction.

We had decided that we were only going to tell Sarah whether or not the induction was getting scheduled, because she was going to take Molly for us. Everyone else would find out once the baby was here. In the early afternoon, the doctor's office called us and said that we were scheduled for an induction, gave us some quick instructions, and told us the hospital would call and let us know what time they wanted us to be there. About an hour later, they called and said we had a 6:00 am appointment and gave us some further instructions. We started getting excited to meet our little boy.

Since the appointment was so early, Molly was going to spend the night at Sarah's house. We took her there right before her normal bed time, dressed in jammies and ready for bed. She didn't fall asleep for hours. We left at almost midnight and Sarah was still sitting in the girl's room with her, trying to get her to fall asleep. I hadn't ever left my baby overnight, and leaving this time was especially hard. I knew I wouldn't be able to put her to bed for at least two more nights, and I really struggled with that. Not to mention when I did come back home I would have a new baby to take care of and I wasn't sure how well she would adjust. I finally kissed my baby goodbye, and left.

We grabbed some food on our way home and tried to go to sleep. I didn't sleep much these days anyway, but even through my exhaustion, going to bed KNOWING I was going to be having a baby the next day made it almost impossible to sleep. After the lights were off and I was situated in my recliner that I had been sleeping in for about two months TR and I talked about how things were going to change. We went over the plan for the days I was in the hospital again, and just other little things in general. I finally fell asleep around 1:30 with my alarm set to go off at 5. I slept pretty soundly once I was able to go to sleep. Once my alarm went off (and I hit snooze a couple of times), I jumped in the shower, double checked my hospital bag, and made sure TR was awake. At 5:45 we were off to the hospital.

We were right on time for our appointment, and we filled out paperwork quickly and got admitted and all hooked up to IVs and such. They started the Pitocin around 7:00 and we were on our way. At this point I was dilated almost to a 3. We had the BEST nurses. Our Labor and Delivery nurse was named Melanie, and there was an intern from UVU there named Sean. They were both there through my whole labor which was really nice. It was nice not having to switch between nurses. With Molly we saw three different nurse shifts. I loved having the same nurse the whole time.

Once the pitocin really started working I was kind of hating life. I have a really really low pain tolerance, and the contractions were pretty much making me want to cry. I thought I had to be dilated to a 4 in order to get my epidural, however Melanie came in after I had been breathing through contractions for about 25 minutes and told me that since I was getting induced I could have my epidural any time I wanted. Yes! Now please! I had to wait another 15-20 minutes for Dr. Lind to come because he had done an epidural for a C-Section, and had to stay until she delivered the baby. I got my epidural around 10:00 and it was all smooth sailing after that. Once the epidural was in, Dr. Glenn came and broke my water. Then they put the internal monitors on the baby, and I was more free. I slept for a few hours between getting checked and checking on the baby.

It took until about noon to get to a 5. Once I was to a 5 though I dilated pretty quickly. Around 2:00 the baby's heart rate would drop every so often with a contraction just like Molly's did, so they watched that pretty closely. Around 3:00 the nurse checked me and said I was about a 9.5, but that we just needed to get the baby out cause he wasn't tolerating the hard contractions very well. Dr. Glenn came and checked me and said I was complete and he was ready for me to push. The baby was in a posterior position, so he was going to use the vacuum to turn him while I pushed. I pushed once and his head and shoulder came out. Dr. Glenn said he didn't even really need to use the vacuum cause I'm such a good pusher (I know, I know, hold the applause), but it helped him turn the baby the right way anyway. One more push and our boy was out! He was crying and he sounded just like Molly did. They held him up and I tried to take him, but the chord wasn't quite long enough. They cut the chord and put him right on me.

When I first got handed Molly, I didn't recognize her. I didn't recognize her until after she had been bathed. Malcolm I recognized right away. He looked just like the baby I had dreamed about, and I instantly felt my heart swell almost to bursting. They took him to get weighed and cleaned up. As they were cleaning him he started getting little spots all over his body. They called them petechia, or little broken capillaries. Because they didn't know what they were from or if they were something contagious, they took him to the NICU to get a general antibiotic, antiviral, run a bunch of tests and to keep an eye on him.
